I have a long talk with Lee Langston (line developer for Interface Zero and long time friend of mine) about what it takes to do a successful playtest. I’ve held on to this episode for a few weeks, so we mention the Mermaid Adventures kickstarter and them starting RoleplayDNA, even though its been out for a bit now, so bare with me on that. It’s a GREAT conversation either way, though. Enjoy!
As I’m sure some of you have noticed, there have been bursts of activity with stretches in between. I thought I’d jump on here and tell you just why that is. In short, I’m uber-busy, working on a ton of projects. So, let’s have a run down of those, shall we?
Mermaid Adventures
First off, the Kickstarter for Mermaid Adventures went swimmingly. So, i’m working hard to get that book done and out the door. Already on layout and working out a solid page count.
API Worldwide: South America
Same thing here. We’ve hit some snags in artwork, but we’re well on our way to releasing API Worldwide: South America pretty soon here.
Storm Battalion
We have a brand new game in the works, written by Brennan Bishop, called Storm Battalion. It’s going into playtesting, so keep and eye out for more information on that.
Sinister
Sinister is progressing on the back end, but sadly isn’t a focus right now. Posts will continue to occur on Fridays, but it may not be “every” Friday for a bit. Maybe every other Friday while we are cleaning up some of these other projects.
Rolling 20s
I have a ton of recorded interviews and I’ve been working on a steady release schedule of 1 episode every 2 weeks. Hope everyone’s been enjoying the show so far, by the way.
Developing Future Books
We’re also currently developing Divine Instruments for Part-Time Gods, Wu Xing: Truth and Lies for Wu Xing: The Ninja Crusade, and Demon Codex: Burners for Apocalypse Prevention, Inc.
So yeah… busy busy busy. Thanks for your patience on the blog posts.
I’ve been enraptured by the rapper, Childish Gambino, as of late. For those of you that do not know of him, let me enlighten you and enrich your life. You may know this awesome rapper as Donald Glover, one of the stars of Community (also one of my favorite shows). I love Community and the wacky exploits of Troy and Abed. They were so silly and very entertaining. It’s probably one of the best written shows on TV today, besides 30 Rock.
Donald Glover as Troy
Then I started looking deeper at this Donald Glover (No relation) and what else he’s done. I watched an awkward, but hilarious movie called Mystery Team that he starred in. Funny enough, he used to write for 30 Rock. That already gave him props in my book. Then I saw that he has a comedy stand-up special out, “Donald Glover – Weirdo”. I watched it. It’s almost TOO funny, but one of the important things he says in the special is this:
“I’m sure you guys all know me as Troy on Community. Well, this shit isn’t going to be anything like that.”
And I was hooked. He’s got so many dimensions that it makes being a fan of his VERY easy, since you’re bound to like “something” he does. Actor, Writer, Comedian, and I thought that was probably it.
Then I found that he was also a rapper. I first checked out his video for a song called Freaks and Geeks, basically just him and a camera and an awesome collection of rhymes, puns and wordplay.
After enjoying his style and his flow, I just had to check out his other stuff (which luckily he has most of it online for free). I can best describe his flow as a mixture of MC Frontalot and Kanye West, taking the best things about both and throwing out the worst. There’s a lot of cursing, but mostly in jest, and his raps are very much about how awesome his is and how haters can go f**k themselves. Mixed into all of that is a a real sense of honesty in his raps. After listening to Childish Gambino, I really feel like I know him and that I could totally be friends with this guy.
His raps speak to me on another level entirely. He talks about the adversity he’s faced and a lot of it was similar to my own: people telling you you can’t do it, calling you things like coconut or oreo (dark on the outside, white on the inside). He also raps about how he got over that and how much better his life is for it. In the end, though, i’m a sucker for an old school rap style with modern flair that can make me think and occasionally laugh. Here’re a few of my favorite lines from Childish Gambino.
“These rappers are afraid of him. Cause I’m a beast, bitch, Gir, Invader Zim”
“Why these mothafuckas think they wakin’ up in pain? Cause they sleepin’ on the hardest nigga in this game”
“And this next part, sounds like nonsense. But I swear to God, Tina Fey gave me confidence. Taught me everything that is good comes from honesty. Everybody’s got a voice, you just gotta follow it”

I’ve been working quite a bit behind the scene with our artist, David Bednar, in working up cool monsters for the setting. The biggest thing that I want to point out is that not ALL the monsters will be primed for pure, focuses combat. While some monsters will be pretty ravenous and able to deal tons of damage, it’s important to me to make balanced monsters that actually hold some sort of other purpose other than just to beat other monsters up.
The idea behind this is that you, as a trainer, could have a few monsters with different purposes. Just think of it, you are sneaking into a building and summon your monkey-like monster that knows how to unlock any door, then you get in and find what you need, but you trip the alarm. Now you have to summon your fighting monster long enough to hold off the guard and make it to door, where you then summon your fast travel monster to get the hell out of there. To me, this is what will make Sinister truly stand out. It’s not just “monster fighting”, it’s on another level.
Me and my friend Jerry Grayson, from Khepera Publishing, talk a bit about our games (especially the second edition of Hellas, which is currently being kickstarted), how a game comes to deserve new edition and Prince. It’s a hell of an episode. I hope you all enjoy.
A nice round number of 350 books sold in Quart 1 of 2012. This is with me running the Kickstarter for API Worldwide: South America and going to GenghisCon XXXIII, but no new products being released. Next quarter have a ton of things coming out, so I’m expecting a big push for Gencon 2012!

Nation number 4 brings us to the halfway point for our wonderful splats. This time it is the Wreckar, a nomadic desert people who specialize in Technoids.
Their civilization was once thriving with plants and animal-life, to the point that it was indistinguishable from the lush forest of pre-Wylds times. However, when the portal energies poured into this world, the land of the Wreckar was drained of life, leaving it a barren wasteland. Their people survived, however, learning to scrounge for what food and tech they could find. Many of the animals once natural to their land either went extinct or migrated other regions. They have very few “natural” monsters left as a result. Instead, they have become masters of Technoids, finding whatever monsters they can and adding tech to them to fit their needs. It has actually become a part of their culture, with each kid learning survival through technology before they can even talk.
The Wreckar are far from the only trainers to use Technoids, but they’ll be the ones that specialize in them. To the point that other trainers will often go in search of a Wreckar to get their monsters “upgraded” instead of learning how to do it themselves.
Possible Character Creation
Skill Bonus: Obviously for Tech. These guys are born gear heads.
Monster Bonus: I plan on having Technoid upgrades and they’ll likely be able to pick one for free for their monsters.
Social Penalty: Wreckar are viewed as untrustworthy, double-dealers. They are very loyal to their own kind, but the world has forsaken them, so they aren’t known to treat others fairly. The fact that they can be considered “not entirely human” as well, due to the character usually have cybernetic parts themselves, makes others uneasy in their presence.
Ever thought of starting your own Kickstarter? This was a great episode with two great guys. I talk with Daniel Solis (who is a kickstarter expert) and Fred Hicks (who just launched his very first Kickstarter to great effect) and we delve into the Kickstarter phenomenon. Now, of course, i have the sniffles and my phone goes off during the interview. Sorry about that. If you can ignore the couple snafus on my part, its one of my favorite episodes to date. Have fun with it! We did.

The thought I’ve been having lately is how to handle the relationship that a trainer has with their monster. This is going to be an important part of the game for a lot of people, so handling it wrong will create a whole lot of bad things for the game. So, I’m going to throw out what I’ve got and see what sticks.
Currently, the idea is to have a sliding scale. Kind of a Light Side/Dark Side, Paragon/Renegade kind of approach. Your relationship starts in the middle and can progress in one of two ways, Positive or Negative. Positive changes are you caring for the monster, talking to the monster, making it your friend, etc. This kind of training will likely provide bonuses to teamwork and the monster caring whether you live or die. Negative changes will boost some of the stats of your monster, harsher training making it hard to scare and possibly stronger physically the worse you treat it, but their relationship will crumble.
The idea is to make the relationship type that you choose really matter to how the monster responds to stimuli and how well it listens to the trainer, but will also color what kind of character the trainer ultimately is. The worst thing you can do is to not have any kind of relationship. It’ll leave you at a strategic advantage and means the monster couldn’t give a crap about you.
My site has actually been messed up on the back end for over a week now. Worst part is that I couldn’t make any posts to let you guys know about it. But we’re back and I’ll be posting new material soon.
