Signature Character #2 - Sair-Lin (Sinister RPG)

Sinister RPG is the newest in the line of games developed for Third Eye Games. For this one, you get to come along for the ride.

Let’s get back on this horse in style, shall we? The second signature character will come from the The Clean.

Sair-Lin is almost 13 and is one of the Chosen of the Clean, those allowed to leave the compound and venture out into the world. True to their kind, she has the protective suit that immediately senses what kind of environment they are in and keeps her from getting sick. Their eyes are used to having a constant level of light, so they are hooded and protected from having to actually “see” what time of day it is. The sensors within their hood, however, give them enough awareness to be on par with others. ”You can never see eye to eye with a Clean” is a common theme, both figuratively and literally. She is full of all the misconceptions of the Clean’s superiority that other trainers have come to expect, yet she treats her travels outside of the Dome as a way to learn more about other cultures, at least to learn “why” they are better. Otherwise, she is quite loyal and happy most of the time.

There were a TON of different versions going around of what the suit looked like for the Clean. Some of them were more armor than anything, but this style that we went with is just simply and direct. You can’t tell from this angle, but their breathers are pointed, making them resemble birds, which will end up being part of their motif. We’re still playing around with color, but this is what we have so far.

Sair-Lin has a bird-type monster as well and we’ve got about 8 different concepts in the works. The one on Sair-Lin’s arm is affectionately called the Rhinocyryx at the moment. Cool, huh? We will be revealing those as we go along. We have a ways to go! Thanks for joining us for the ride, you guys!

Until next time.

Welcome back. Very neat stuff going on here. I like the idea of the birdlike style. Cool art as always, and I like the touch of color present. Any chance that at least the digital copy of the book will be in color? I’m guessing that this is a decision that will be made during the layout process and this project is still quite a ways from that.

As I have been remiss in sharing my thoughts on the older post, I think this is a good time to mention my impressions on the Clean. In most games, I tend to be leery of bad guy factions, which I would consider the Clean to be (more so than Shadow Valley) since they are the ones that caused the mess that the world is in today. My fear is that when a player wants to play a faction such as Wu Xing’s Grasping Shadows or Hidden Strings of Fate that they are going to be too disruptive to the game as they put their faction and personal agendas above cooperation with the other players, which could be very problematic in a game about fighting for survival against overwhelming forces.

However, with the Clean it seems less problematic to me. I feel this is in part due to the concept of the game, which seems that it would be inherently competitive and most players would be following the same goal, banning together due to the mutual benefit against external forces. Also, due to the generation gap, PCs are probably not the ones who decided to ravage the world for their personal gain, but being easily identifiable member of the nation, would still have to deal with prejudices caused by the decision, which brings interesting conflict.

Also, were the Clean inspired by the quarians from Mass Effect?

I try to make every splat in my games playable with the rest of them. Even in wu xing, the Strands can work together pretty nicely since most of them don’t even truly know of their master’s devious plots. You pegged it right, though, that in Sinister, the lines of good and bad won’t really be as strong. It’s all about making it to Cloud Nation.

Glad you like the Clean. Yes, they were slightly inspired by the Quarians in Mass Effect, but with a much different background.
